Knox County Tennessee

Emergency Preparedness Division

KCHD’s Emergency Preparedness (EP) Division enhances community preparedness by encouraging and supporting readiness planning efforts among all community members, from individual households to large corporations. The EP Division also fosters relationships with federal, state and local governments, as well as nongovernmental organizations to prepare for and respond to potential hazards.

By working with law enforcement, fire departments, emergency medical personnel and emergency management agencies, the health department plays a crucial role in responding to public health emergencies such as natural disasters, infectious disease outbreaks, emerging public health threats or bioterrorism.

Is your family ready for a disaster?

In East Tennessee, the types of incidents that are most likely to occur are:

  1. Severe weather – storms, snow, ice, flooding
  2. Hazardous materials accidents by truck, rail or at a facility
  3. Severe illness – outbreaks such as the flu or other disease
  4. Residential fire

Two important things you and your family can do to be prepared for a disaster is to have an emergency supply kit in your home and rehearse an emergency communication plan. Click here for guidance on making a supply kit and communication plan.
