The fastest growing population in Tennessee and in Knox County are those over 65 years of age. By 2030, one out of every four people living in this area will be aged 65+. As Knox County's population continues to grow, the Knox County Health department (KCHD) partnered with leaders across Knox County departments as well as local AARP volunteers to become part of AARP's Age-Friendly Network.
Over the course of a year, KCHD facilitated a process to develop the Knox County AARP Action Plan, which addresses three of AARP's domains of livability: housing, social participation and outdoor spaces and buildings.
On Sept. 22, 2024, Knox County was officially recognized as an AARP Age-Friendly Community. KCHD also became the first metro health department in Tennessee to be recognized through the Trust for America’s Health as an Age Friendly Public Health System. This recognition reflects KCHD’s commitment to prioritize healthy aging, ensures that aging well is a core function of public health and fulfills an established action defined in Knox County's AARP Action Plan.
The Knox County Action Plan is aimed towards creating opportunities for housing, recreation, engagement and improving health and community services. To learn more about the data behind this plan or the community resources available for those age 55 and up, visit the pages below.
